FGM

The term female genital mutilation covers all partial or total ablations of the vulva carried out between childhood and adulthood. These mutilations are due to social norms of control over women resulting from gender inequality. They are often linked to ancestral beliefs and a desire to control female sexuality.

These social norms create pressure on families which encourages them to perpetuate them for fear of being rejected by their community. These practices still exist in 2021, they are practiced in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East, some countries in Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan), Peru and Colombia. The countries represented are: Mali, Egypt, Guinea and Indonesia
